What it means
The control module detects a range or performance problem in the shift solenoid A control circuit.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Shift solenoid A is an electrically operated valve in the transmission hydraulic system; it helps route fluid to control gear changes. The control module monitors the A circuit and the solenoid’s response, setting P0972 when that response or circuit behavior falls outside the expected range. This does not by itself identify whether the solenoid or its wiring is at fault.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Faulty shift solenoid A
- Open, shorted, or high-resistance wiring or connection
- Transmission control module fault
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and scan transmission live data for commanded shifts and solenoid A operation to see when the fault occurs.
- Check transmission fluid condition and level using the vehicle’s specified procedure, since fluid problems can affect shift response.
- Inspect solenoid A’s connector and harness for looseness, corrosion, damaged insulation, or fluid contamination.
- Check solenoid A coil and its control wiring for continuity, shorts, and excessive resistance against the manufacturer’s specification.
- Compare the module’s command with the electrical response at solenoid A during an appropriate scan-tool test.
- Consider a transmission control module fault only after the solenoid and its wiring pass their checks.
Common fixes
- Repair a loose, corroded, or damaged solenoid A connector.
- Repair chafed, open, shorted, or high-resistance wiring in the solenoid A circuit.
- Replace shift solenoid A if its coil or response fails the specified tests.
- Repair or replace the transmission control module if testing confirms it is not controlling the circuit correctly.
Can I keep driving?
If shifts are harsh, delayed, slipping, or the vehicle enters limp mode, avoid towing, hard acceleration, and long trips; continued driving can worsen transmission damage. If it shifts normally, limit driving and arrange diagnosis soon.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
