OBD-II fault code

P0984: Shift Solenoid E Control Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The control module detects a range or performance problem in the shift solenoid E control circuit.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Shift solenoid E is an electrically controlled valve that directs transmission fluid during gear changes. P0984 means the transmission control module sees the E solenoid circuit response or operation outside its expected range, rather than a simple open or high/low signal alone.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Faulty shift solenoid E
  2. Open, shorted, or high-resistance wiring or connection
  3. Transmission control module fault

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame and transmission live data for the E solenoid command and shifting conditions when P0984 set, and note related codes.
  2. Inspect the E solenoid connector and wiring for loose or corroded terminals, chafing, or damage that could cause an intermittent or resistive connection.
  3. Test shift solenoid E coil resistance and operation according to the manufacturer's procedure and specifications.
  4. Check the E control circuit between the transmission and control module for opens, shorts, and excessive resistance.
  5. If the solenoid and circuit pass, verify module powers, grounds, connector terminals, and the E command before considering a module fault.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose, corroded, or damaged connection in the E solenoid circuit.
  • Repair wiring with an open, short, or excessive resistance.
  • Replace shift solenoid E if it fails the manufacturer's electrical or operation test.
  • Repair or replace the control module only after its circuit and outputs are confirmed faulty.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving if shifts are harsh, slipping, delayed, or the transmission enters limp mode, and avoid towing or heavy acceleration. Continued abnormal shifts can cause additional transmission wear or damage.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
