OBD-II fault code

P0975: Shift Solenoid B Control Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The control module detects a range or performance problem in the shift solenoid B control circuit.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Shift solenoid B is an electrically operated valve in the transmission that routes hydraulic fluid for gear changes. The control module monitors the B circuit and the solenoid’s response, setting P0975 when circuit behavior or response falls outside the expected range. The code points to the B control path, but does not alone prove the solenoid is defective.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Faulty shift solenoid B
  2. Open, shorted, or high-resistance wiring or connection
  3. Transmission control module fault

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and review transmission live data for commanded shifts and solenoid B operation when the fault occurred.
  2. Check transmission fluid condition and level using the vehicle’s specified procedure because hydraulic issues can affect shift response.
  3. Inspect solenoid B’s connector and harness for corrosion, loose pins, fluid intrusion, or damaged wiring.
  4. Test the B solenoid coil and its wiring for continuity, shorts, and resistance against the manufacturer’s specification.
  5. Compare the module’s command with solenoid B’s electrical response during an appropriate scan-tool test.
  6. Investigate the transmission control module only after solenoid B and its circuit pass testing.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose, corroded, or fluid-contaminated solenoid B connector.
  • Repair open, shorted, chafed, or high-resistance wiring in the solenoid B circuit.
  • Replace shift solenoid B if its coil or response fails the specified tests.
  • Repair or replace the transmission control module if testing confirms it is not controlling solenoid B correctly.

Can I keep driving?

If shifts are harsh, delayed, slipping, or the vehicle enters limp mode, avoid towing, hard acceleration, and long trips because continued abnormal shifting can damage the transmission. If it drives normally, limit use and arrange diagnosis soon.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
