What it means
The clutch actuator does not meet performance criteria during commanded movement, indicating mechanical or hydraulic resistance beyond expected range.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The clutch actuator positions the clutch in an automated manual or dual-clutch transmission, and the transmission controller compares commanded movement with the actuator's response. This code sets when movement, speed, or position falls outside the expected range, which can result from actuator resistance, clutch wear beyond adaptation, or a drifting sensor.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Actuator worn or sluggish
- Clutch disc worn beyond adaptation
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and compare commanded and actual clutch actuator position during the shift event to see whether response is slow, incomplete, or inconsistent.
- Inspect the actuator connector and harness for corrosion, loose terminals, damage, or intermittent contact that could imitate poor actuator performance.
- Check actuator supply, ground, and feedback wiring according to the wiring diagram and manufacturer's specification.
- Use the manufacturer's procedure to assess actuator movement for sluggishness or binding and review clutch wear or adaptation data if available.
- If wiring and mechanical movement are sound, test the position sensor feedback for accuracy across the operating range.
Common fixes
- Repair a loose, corroded, or damaged actuator connection.
- Correct binding or resistance in the actuator linkage or mechanism.
- Replace a worn or sluggish clutch actuator.
- Service the clutch if its wear is beyond the transmission's adaptation range.
- Replace a feedback sensor that fails the manufacturer's accuracy checks.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving and avoid hard acceleration or repeated stop-and-go shifts if the clutch slips, shudders, or engages late; the clutch can overheat and wear further. Do not drive if the transmission enters limp mode or cannot reliably select gears.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
