What it means
The TCM detects an open circuit at the clutch actuator output. Used on automated manual or dual-clutch transmissions.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The clutch actuator moves the clutch in an automated manual or dual-clutch transmission, and the transmission control module monitors the actuator circuit when it commands movement. This code sets when the circuit is electrically open, so the module cannot drive the actuator as expected.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Actuator winding open
- Wiring break
- Pin pushed back out of connector body
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check transmission codes and actuator command data to establish when the clutch actuator circuit stopped responding.
- Inspect the actuator connector for a pushed-back pin, poor seating, corrosion, or heat damage, and check the harness for breaks or chafing.
- With power off as directed by service information, check continuity through the actuator winding and wiring against the wiring diagram and manufacturer's specification.
- Check connector pin fit and continuity while gently moving the harness to reveal an intermittent break or terminal that loses contact.
- If the actuator and wiring are intact, test the transmission control module output circuit using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
Common fixes
- Reseat or repair a pushed-back actuator connector pin.
- Repair a broken or chafed wire in the clutch actuator circuit.
- Replace a clutch actuator with an open winding.
- Repair a failed control module output circuit if confirmed by testing.
Can I keep driving?
If the clutch will not engage or shifts are missing, avoid driving; the vehicle may be unable to select or hold a gear. If it still moves, drive only as needed to reach a safe stopping place, since an open circuit can cause sudden loss of shifting.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
