What it means
The clutch B actuator control circuit reports a control circuit performance condition. Clutch B engagement cannot be commanded reliably.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The TCM controls the Clutch B actuator through its control circuit and monitors how promptly the clutch responds. This code sets when the circuit or actuator response is slower or weaker than calibrated, even though the circuit is not necessarily fully open.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Actuator response slower than calibrated
- High-resistance contact
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare Clutch B command with its response in live data to establish whether the delay occurs during engagement or release.
- Inspect the Clutch B actuator connector and wiring for corrosion, loose terminals, heat damage, or other signs of a high-resistance connection.
- Check the circuit connections and voltage drop under the manufacturer's specified operating conditions, comparing results with the manufacturer's specification.
- Use the manufacturer's scan-tool procedure to command Clutch B and check whether its response is consistently delayed.
- If the circuit has sound connections, test the actuator and clutch mechanism for slow operation or binding before replacing parts.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure a loose or corroded Clutch B actuator connector.
- Repair wiring or terminals that create excessive resistance.
- Correct binding in the actuator or clutch mechanism if confirmed.
- Replace the Clutch B actuator if it responds too slowly with a sound circuit.
Can I keep driving?
Keep driving to a minimum if shifts are delayed or the transmission shudders, and avoid towing or hard acceleration. A slow Clutch B response can worsen clutch slip and may lead to limp mode or loss of drive.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
