P08ED: Drive Motor A Clutch Pawl Position Performance

What it means

The drive motor A clutch pawl position circuit reports a performance condition. Hybrid clutch engagement cannot be reliably commanded or verified.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Drive Motor A's clutch pawl engages or releases part of the hybrid drivetrain, while its position sensor lets the controller compare actual movement with the command. This performance code sets when the signal is present but the reported pawl position or movement does not match the expected response, such as from a worn pawl or drifting sensor.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Pawl mechanism worn
  2. Sensor reference drifted

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Capture freeze-frame data and compare commanded and reported Drive Motor A pawl position in scan-tool data to identify when the mismatch occurs.
  2. Inspect the pawl sensor, connector, and nearby harness for looseness, corrosion, damage, or signs of mechanical interference.
  3. Check sensor supply, ground, and signal quality through the pawl's movement according to the wiring diagram and manufacturer's specification.
  4. Use the manufacturer's procedure to assess whether the pawl reaches its commanded positions consistently and without binding.
  5. If movement is consistent but the reported position is inaccurate, test the sensor for drift or an out-of-calibration output.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure the pawl sensor connector and repair damaged wiring.
  • Correct binding or wear in the Drive Motor A pawl mechanism if serviceable.
  • Replace a pawl position sensor that drifts or fails its output test.
  • Repair or replace the pawl assembly if it cannot reach commanded positions.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid driving if shifting causes shudder, slipping, missing gears, or limp mode, because the hybrid clutch may not engage as commanded. Arrange prompt diagnosis; continued operation can worsen drivetrain wear or leave the vehicle without drive.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
