OBD-II fault code

P07F0: Transmission Range Multi-Function Select Circuit High

What it means

The transmission range multi-function select circuit signal is above the expected level. The code does not specify the circuit design or exact electrical fault.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The transmission range select circuit sends selector position information to the control module. P07F0 sets when the circuit signal is higher than expected, which can result from a wire shorted to battery voltage or a supply wire pinched against a powered source.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Wire shorted to battery voltage
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Supply wire pinched against B+ source

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare the scan-tool range reading with the actual selector position when the high signal was detected.
  2. Inspect the range select harness for pinched sections or insulation damage where it could contact a battery-positive or other powered wire.
  3. Check the sensor connector for corrosion, damaged pins, or evidence that terminals are touching an unintended power source.
  4. Using the vehicle wiring information, test the select circuit for an unintended connection to battery voltage.
  5. Measure the signal at the range sensor and control module while moving the selector, and compare readings with the manufacturer's specification.
  6. If the circuit signal is correct at the module connector but the code returns, check the module circuit using the vehicle's diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair a pinched wire or short to a powered source and secure the harness away from contact points.
  • Repair or replace damaged or corroded connector terminals.
  • Replace a range sensor only if its output remains high with the wiring verified.
  • Repair a confirmed control module circuit fault after checking the select circuit.

Can I keep driving?

If the transmission reports the wrong range, shifts abnormally, or enters limp mode, avoid driving until the high signal is diagnosed. Continued operation with unreliable range information can cause poor shifting or unexpected gear selection.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
