OBD-II fault code

P07EE: Transmission Range Multi-Function Select Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The transmission range multi-function select circuit has a range or performance fault. The code does not establish a particular signal encoding or cause.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The transmission range select circuit conveys the driver's selected range to the control module. P07EE sets when the signal is outside the expected range or does not perform as expected, which can point to contaminated encoder contacts, a sensor outside its calibration window, or loose mounting.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Contaminated rotary encoder contacts
  2. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
  3. Sensor mounting loose - signal damping

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data, then compare the scan-tool range reading with the selector position and note when the mismatch occurs.
  2. Move the selector through each position while watching live range data for readings that are inconsistent, delayed, or unstable.
  3. Inspect the range sensor or encoder mounting for looseness and check the selector mechanism for binding that could affect sensor movement.
  4. Inspect the sensor connector and wiring for contamination, corrosion, looseness, or damage.
  5. Test the range sensor or encoder output across selector positions and compare the results with the manufacturer's specification.
  6. If the sensor signal is correct at the component but not at the module, test the intervening wiring and module circuit.

Common fixes

  • Secure a loose range sensor or encoder mounting.
  • Clean contaminated encoder contacts where the design allows service.
  • Repair a damaged or corroded connector or wire.
  • Replace a range sensor or encoder that fails its position or calibration checks.
  • Repair a confirmed module circuit fault after checking the sensor and wiring.

Can I keep driving?

If the transmission hesitates, slips, or selects the wrong gear, limit driving and avoid heavy acceleration or towing until the range signal is checked. A worsening mismatch can cause unpredictable shifting or leave the transmission in a protective mode.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
