OBD-II fault code

P07EF: Transmission Range Multi-Function Select Circuit Low

What it means

The transmission range multi-function select circuit signal is below the expected level. The code does not specify the circuit design or exact electrical fault.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The transmission range select circuit carries the selector position signal to the control module. P07EF sets when that signal is lower than expected; a short to ground, chafed wiring, or a poor connector contact can pull it down.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Wire shorted to ground
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Harness chafing through insulation

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare the scan-tool range reading with the selected position to see when the low signal appears.
  2. Inspect the range select harness along its route for chafing, crushed sections, or insulation worn through to ground.
  3. Check the range switch or sensor connector for corrosion, damaged pins, or a loose connection that could add resistance.
  4. Using the wiring information for the vehicle, test the select circuit for an unintended short to ground and check continuity through the harness.
  5. Measure the circuit signal at the sensor and at the control module while changing selector positions, comparing readings with the manufacturer's specification.
  6. If the signal is correct at the module connector but the fault remains, check the module circuit using the vehicle's diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair chafed wiring and restore its insulation and routing.
  • Clean or replace corroded or damaged connector terminals.
  • Repair a select wire shorted to ground.
  • Replace a range switch or sensor only if its output remains low with a verified circuit.
  • Repair a confirmed control module circuit fault after verifying its wiring.

Can I keep driving?

If the range display is wrong, shifts are abnormal, or the transmission enters limp mode, avoid driving until the signal fault is checked; the selected gear may not be recognized correctly. Continued driving with slipping or erratic shifts can increase transmission wear.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
