What it means
The transmission range multi-function select circuit is stuck or not responding as expected. The code does not identify a specific selector type or cause.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The transmission range select switch or sensor reports which position the driver has selected, and the control module compares that information with the expected position changes. P07ED sets when the multi-function select circuit appears stuck or fails to respond as expected; it does not identify a particular selector design or cause.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Range select switch or sensor sticking or malfunctioning
- Mechanical binding in the selector mechanism
- Damaged or misaligned selector linkage
- Wiring or connector fault
- Control module circuit fault
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Use a scan tool to record freeze-frame data and compare the reported transmission range with the gear selected when the fault occurred.
- With the vehicle secured, move the selector through its positions and check whether the displayed range changes promptly and consistently.
- Inspect the selector mechanism and linkage for binding, damage, or misalignment that could prevent the switch or sensor from moving.
- Check the range switch or sensor connector and wiring for loose pins, corrosion, chafing, or other visible damage.
- If the mechanical parts and wiring look sound, test the select circuit and switch or sensor operation against the manufacturer's specification.
- If the circuit tests correctly, check for a control module fault using the vehicle's diagnostic procedure.
Common fixes
- Free or repair a binding selector mechanism.
- Adjust or repair damaged or misaligned selector linkage.
- Clean or repair a loose, corroded, or damaged connector or wire.
- Replace a faulty range select switch or sensor after confirming its circuit and operation.
- Repair or replace a control module only after its power, ground, and select circuit have been verified.
Can I keep driving?
If the selected range is uncertain, shifts are harsh, or the transmission enters limp mode, avoid driving and arrange a safe inspection; the vehicle may not respond as expected to the selector. Continued operation with slipping or incorrect engagement can worsen transmission damage.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
