OBD-II fault code

P07F2: Transmission Range Control Module Communication Circuit

What it means

A fault was detected in the transmission range control module communication circuit. The code does not establish which communication network or module arrangement is used.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The transmission range control module exchanges information with other vehicle modules so the selected range can be coordinated with transmission control. P07F2 sets when the communication circuit for that module has a fault, but it does not identify which network or module arrangement the vehicle uses.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Bus fault between modules
  2. Failed range control module
  3. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and scan all available modules for communication codes to identify which modules report missing or faulty messages.
  2. Check whether the transmission range control module appears in the scan tool and note any communication interruptions or related module faults.
  3. Inspect the module connector and accessible network wiring for looseness, corrosion, water intrusion, or physical damage.
  4. Check module power and ground connections, since a supply fault can interrupt communication.
  5. Test the communication circuit between the range control module and the network using the vehicle's diagnostic procedure and wiring information.
  6. If the bus wiring and module power are sound, check gateway message routing and assess the range control module for failure.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose, corroded, or damaged module connector.
  • Repair damaged communication wiring between the range control module and the network.
  • Restore a faulty module power or ground connection.
  • Correct a confirmed gateway routing fault.
  • Replace a range control module only after its wiring, power, ground, and network have been verified.

Can I keep driving?

If the transmission warning is on and shifting is abnormal or the vehicle enters limp mode, avoid unnecessary driving and arrange a prompt diagnosis. Loss of module communication can prevent normal shift control and leave the transmission operating with limited functions.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
