OBD-II fault code

P07E3: Incorrect Shift from Gear 8

What it means

The transmission control module detected an incorrect shift from 8th gear. The code does not specify which component caused the shift error.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The transmission control module compares the commanded gear with gear and speed data as the transmission shifts out of 8th. P07E3 sets when that shift does not follow the expected pattern; it identifies the shift from 8th as incorrect but does not pinpoint the cause.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Shift solenoid sticking or malfunctioning
  2. Low or degraded transmission fluid
  3. Hydraulic pressure loss or valve body fault
  4. Worn or damaged clutch or friction element
  5. Internal transmission wear or damage

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and review commanded gear, actual gear, and input and output speeds to see when the shift from 8th went wrong.
  2. Check the transmission fluid level and condition using the vehicle manufacturer's procedure, since low or degraded fluid can disrupt the shift.
  3. Inspect transmission connectors and wiring for damage, corrosion, or loose connections that could affect shift-solenoid control.
  4. Use a scan tool to compare commanded and actual solenoid states during a suitable road test, if safe, and look for a sticking or unresponsive solenoid.
  5. If the electrical checks pass, have hydraulic pressure and valve-body operation assessed against the manufacturer's specification.
  6. If pressure and valve-body checks do not explain the fault, inspect the clutch or friction elements and other internal parts for wear or damage.

Common fixes

  • Correct the transmission fluid level or service degraded fluid as specified by the manufacturer.
  • Repair damaged wiring or clean and secure affected transmission connectors.
  • Repair or replace a confirmed faulty shift solenoid.
  • Repair a leaking hydraulic circuit or faulty valve body.
  • Repair worn clutch or friction elements or other confirmed internal transmission damage.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid hard acceleration and towing, and stop driving if the transmission slips, shudders, or loses drive. Continued driving with an incorrect shift from 8th can worsen clutch or internal transmission damage; arrange prompt diagnosis.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
