OBD-II fault code

P07DD: Incorrect Shift from Gear 2

What it means

The transmission control module detected an incorrect shift from 2nd gear. The code does not specify which component caused the shift error.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

As the transmission shifts out of 2nd gear, the TCM monitors gear-speed signals and shift timing to check that the commanded transition completes correctly. This code points to an incorrect shift from 2nd, but does not identify the particular solenoid, hydraulic fault, or friction element involved.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Shift solenoid sticking or malfunctioning
  2. Low or degraded transmission fluid
  3. Hydraulic pressure loss or valve body fault
  4. Worn or damaged clutch or friction element
  5. Internal transmission wear or damage

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check commanded gear, actual gear, speeds, and related transmission codes to establish the conditions during the shift from 2nd.
  2. Check transmission fluid level and condition using the manufacturer’s specified procedure, and look for leaks that can affect shift pressure.
  3. Inspect solenoid and speed-sensor wiring and connectors for damage, corrosion, fluid intrusion, or loose terminals.
  4. Review live data during a safe road test to determine whether the shift is commanded and whether the transmission speed readings show a delayed or incomplete transition.
  5. If the signals are credible, test solenoid operation and hydraulic pressure using manufacturer procedures, then assess the clutch or friction element involved.

Common fixes

  • Repair any fluid leak and set the fluid level using the specified procedure.
  • Replace degraded or incorrect fluid when supported by inspection and service guidance.
  • Repair damaged wiring or connections in the shift-solenoid and speed-sensor circuits.
  • Replace a solenoid confirmed faulty by electrical and functional tests.
  • Repair a confirmed valve-body pressure fault or worn clutch or friction element.

Can I keep driving?

If the shift out of 2nd causes pronounced slipping, shuddering, or limp mode, stop driving when safe and arrange repair; continued slipping can cause more damage. If symptoms are minor, avoid hard acceleration and towing until the fault is diagnosed.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
