What it means
The transmission control system detected that Drive could not be engaged when requested. The code does not identify a particular failed component.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The transmission control system compares the requested Drive range with the range and engagement status it receives. P07E5 sets when Drive cannot be confirmed after it is requested; the code alone does not identify whether the problem is electrical, hydraulic, mechanical, or internal.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Shift solenoid sticking or malfunctioning
- Low or degraded transmission fluid
- Hydraulic pressure loss or valve body fault
- Fault in shift actuator or linkage
- Internal transmission wear or damage
Symptoms
- Drive may not engage when selected
- Transmission or powertrain warning may appear
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare requested and reported range on a scan tool when Drive is selected.
- Check the transmission fluid level and condition according to the manufacturer's procedure, since low or degraded fluid can prevent engagement.
- Inspect the selector linkage or actuator, where accessible, and check connectors and wiring for looseness, corrosion, or damage.
- Use scan-tool data and the manufacturer's procedure to check shift-solenoid operation and whether the commanded range reaches the transmission.
- If the selector and electrical checks pass, test hydraulic pressure and valve-body operation against the manufacturer's specification.
- If pressure and control checks do not account for the missing Drive engagement, inspect for internal clutch or transmission damage.
Common fixes
- Correct the fluid level or service degraded fluid as specified by the manufacturer.
- Adjust or repair a confirmed selector linkage fault, or secure a loose connector.
- Repair damaged wiring or replace a confirmed faulty shift solenoid.
- Repair a hydraulic leak or faulty valve body.
- Repair confirmed internal clutch or transmission damage.
Can I keep driving?
Do not enter traffic if Drive does not engage reliably, and avoid repeated attempts to force the vehicle to move. Continued attempts can overheat or damage the transmission; arrange recovery if it cannot move safely.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
