OBD-II fault code

P07E1: Incorrect Shift from Gear 6

What it means

The transmission control module detected an incorrect shift from 6th gear. The code does not specify which component caused the shift error.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

When the transmission shifts out of 6th gear, the TCM monitors shift timing and speed signals to confirm the requested gear change. This code means the transition from 6th did not meet the expected criteria, without identifying a specific failed part.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Shift solenoid sticking or malfunctioning
  2. Low or degraded transmission fluid
  3. Hydraulic pressure loss or valve body fault
  4. Worn or damaged clutch or friction element
  5. Internal transmission wear or damage

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and related transmission codes, noting commanded and actual gear plus speed readings when the shift from 6th was flagged.
  2. Check fluid level and condition using the manufacturer’s procedure, and look for leaks that may lower hydraulic pressure.
  3. Inspect wiring and connectors for the shift solenoids and speed sensors for damage, corrosion, or poor contact.
  4. Compare commanded gear with live speed data during a safe road test to check for delayed shifting or a sensor signal that drops out.
  5. If the sensor signals are credible, test solenoid operation and hydraulic pressure using manufacturer procedures, then investigate internal friction-element wear.

Common fixes

  • Repair transmission leaks and set fluid level with the specified fluid.
  • Replace degraded or incorrect fluid when indicated by inspection and the service procedure.
  • Repair damaged wiring or connector faults in the solenoid or speed-sensor circuits.
  • Replace a solenoid confirmed faulty by electrical and functional checks.
  • Repair a confirmed valve-body pressure problem or worn friction element.

Can I keep driving?

If shifting out of 6th causes slipping, shuddering, or limp mode, avoid driving because continued operation can worsen transmission damage. If symptoms are slight and the vehicle remains controllable, drive gently and avoid heavy loads until diagnosed.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
