OBD-II fault code

P07DE: Incorrect Shift from Gear 3

What it means

The transmission control module detected an incorrect shift from 3rd gear. The code does not specify which component caused the shift error.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

When shifting out of 3rd gear, the TCM checks shift timing and transmission speed signals to verify the commanded gear change. This code sets when that transition is incorrect, but it does not identify whether a solenoid, hydraulic pressure problem, or worn friction element is responsible.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Shift solenoid sticking or malfunctioning
  2. Low or degraded transmission fluid
  3. Hydraulic pressure loss or valve body fault
  4. Worn or damaged clutch or friction element
  5. Internal transmission wear or damage

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and related transmission codes, noting commanded gear, actual gear, and speeds when the shift from 3rd was detected as incorrect.
  2. Check fluid level and condition with the manufacturer’s procedure, and inspect for leaks that could reduce hydraulic pressure.
  3. Inspect transmission connectors and wiring for the shift solenoids and speed sensors for damage, corrosion, and loose connections.
  4. Compare commanded gear and live speed data during a safe road test to determine whether the shift is delayed, incomplete, or accompanied by implausible sensor readings.
  5. If sensor and circuit readings are normal, test solenoid response and hydraulic pressure using manufacturer procedures, then investigate the relevant friction elements.

Common fixes

  • Repair transmission fluid leaks and restore the level with the specified fluid.
  • Replace fluid that is degraded or incorrect when service findings support it.
  • Repair damaged wiring or connector faults in the shift-solenoid or speed-sensor circuits.
  • Replace a shift solenoid confirmed faulty by testing.
  • Repair a confirmed valve-body fault or worn internal friction element.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid driving if the shift out of 3rd repeatedly slips, shudders, or triggers limp mode, since continued operation can increase transmission wear. If the vehicle remains stable and symptoms are mild, drive gently and avoid towing or strong acceleration until checked.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
