OBD-II fault code

P07E4: Unable to Engage Park

What it means

The transmission control system detected that Park could not be engaged when requested. The code does not identify a particular actuator or park mechanism design.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The transmission control system checks whether the selected range matches the range it reports after Park is requested. P07E4 sets when the system cannot confirm that Park engaged; the code does not specify the actuator or parking mechanism design.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Park pawl jammed against tooth (rock vehicle to release)
  2. Failed park actuator motor

Symptoms

  • Park position may not engage when selected
  • Transmission or powertrain warning may appear

How to diagnose it

  1. On level ground, secure the vehicle with the parking brake and record freeze-frame data and range-command status before clearing anything.
  2. Check whether the selector indication and scan-tool reported range change when Park is requested, to distinguish a recognition problem from a failure to engage.
  3. Inspect accessible selector, actuator, and transmission connectors and wiring for looseness, corrosion, or damage.
  4. If the vehicle is safely secured, relieve driveline load by gently rocking it as permitted by the owner's manual, then retry Park; a pawl can be loaded against a gear tooth.
  5. Use the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure to test the park actuator and its circuit, if fitted, and verify operation of the parking mechanism.

Common fixes

  • Secure the vehicle with the parking brake and unload a pawl that is bound against a gear tooth, following the owner's manual.
  • Clean and secure a loose or corroded selector or actuator connector.
  • Repair damaged wiring or a confirmed actuator circuit fault.
  • Replace a failed park actuator or repair the parking mechanism after confirming the fault.

Can I keep driving?

Do not rely on the transmission to hold the vehicle if Park will not engage; apply the parking brake and use wheel chocks on a slope. Arrange recovery if the vehicle cannot be secured safely, because it may roll.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
