What it means
The transmission control module detected that friction element H did not release as expected. The code alone does not identify the cause.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Friction element H is an internal transmission clutch or brake that the transmission controller applies for particular gear states and releases for others. The controller infers its operation from transmission signals and sets P07B1 when element H appears to remain applied after a commanded release.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Stuck apply piston
- Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
- Component wear with age - mechanical play
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and transmission live data to identify the gear change and operating conditions when the controller detected element H staying applied.
- Check for related transmission codes and compare commanded gear or clutch states with available speed and ratio data to see whether the fault is isolated to the H release event.
- Inspect the transmission fluid condition and level using the manufacturer's procedure, since contaminated fluid or debris can restrict internal movement.
- If the fault can be reproduced safely, monitor transmission data during the shift and note whether the expected release coincides with harshness, slip, or an incorrect ratio.
- If external checks do not explain the fault, have the transmission inspected for a sticking H apply piston, debris, or wear and mechanical play.
Common fixes
- Correct the transmission fluid level or condition if it is outside the manufacturer's specification.
- Repair any verified external issue affecting transmission operation or control.
- Clean or repair internal components if debris is preventing the H apply piston from moving freely.
- Repair or replace worn or sticking friction element H components as inspection confirms.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid towing, hard acceleration, and continued driving if shifts are harsh, slipping, or the transmission enters limp mode; an element that fails to release can worsen internal damage. If the vehicle cannot select gears predictably, stop in a safe place and arrange recovery.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
