What it means
The transmission control module detected that friction element C did not release as expected. The code alone does not identify the cause.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Friction element C is a clutch or brake inside the automatic transmission that holds or connects rotating parts for selected gear ratios. The transmission control module (TCM) compares the commanded release with transmission speed and ratio data. P07A7 sets when those signals indicate element C remains applied when it should release.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Stuck apply piston
- Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
- Component wear with age - mechanical play
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Record the freeze-frame data and check live gear, input-speed, and output-speed readings to identify when the TCM detects that element C is still holding.
- Check the transmission fluid level and condition using the vehicle's specified procedure, since contaminated or incorrect fluid can interfere with clutch release.
- Inspect accessible transmission wiring and connectors for damage, corrosion, loose terminals, or fluid intrusion that could disrupt control or feedback.
- Use a scan tool to compare commanded gear and shift data with actual speed and ratio readings during a cautious road test, if the vehicle can be driven safely.
- Have the transmission's hydraulic operation and element C inspected for a sticking apply piston, debris, or wear if the data confirms the element is not releasing.
Common fixes
- Correct the fluid level or service the fluid if its condition or type is wrong and the manufacturer's procedure calls for service.
- Repair damaged or poorly connected transmission wiring or connectors.
- Remove contamination or debris that is preventing element C's apply piston from moving freely, if service inspection confirms it.
- Repair or replace the sticking or worn element C components, including the apply piston, as indicated by internal inspection.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid driving if shifts are harsh, the transmission slips, shudders, or the vehicle enters limp mode; a clutch that remains applied can cause further transmission damage and unpredictable driveability. If symptoms are mild, limit driving to a short trip for diagnosis and stop if they worsen.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
