OBD-II fault code

P07A6: Transmission Friction Element C Performance/Stuck Off

What it means

The transmission control module detected a performance problem with friction element C or that it did not engage as expected. The code alone does not identify the cause.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The transmission control module checks whether friction element C engages as commanded by comparing the expected and actual transmission ratio. P07A6 indicates poor performance or an apparent failure of element C to apply; a leaking seal, restricted movement, or worn parts may prevent it from holding.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Leaking apply seal
  2. Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
  3. Component wear with age - mechanical play

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check live commanded gear and input/output speeds to find when element C failed to produce the expected ratio.
  2. Check fluid level and condition using the maker’s procedure, since low or degraded fluid can prevent element C from receiving enough apply pressure.
  3. Inspect transmission wiring and connectors for damage, corrosion, or looseness that could interrupt element C control.
  4. Use a controlled road test to identify whether shifts involving element C are delayed, missing, or accompanied by slipping or shudder.
  5. If fluid and wiring checks are inconclusive, test hydraulic pressure and valve-body operation against the manufacturer's specification.
  6. If pressure control is satisfactory, inspect element C’s apply seal and internal friction parts for leakage, debris, or wear.

Common fixes

  • Restore the specified fluid level or replace degraded fluid with the correct type.
  • Repair damaged wiring or clean and secure connectors.
  • Repair a valve-body or hydraulic pressure fault affecting element C.
  • Replace a leaking apply seal or worn element C friction parts, and clear any restriction found in its passages.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid heavy loads, towing, and extended trips while element C is failing to engage, because continued slipping can overheat the transmission and worsen internal wear. If shifts are missing or the vehicle enters limp mode, stop safely and arrange recovery.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
