What it means
The transmission control module detected a performance problem with friction element G or that it did not engage as expected. The code alone does not identify the cause.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Friction element G is a clutch or brake inside the automatic transmission that engages to create particular gear ratios. The TCM compares the commanded engagement with transmission speed and ratio data. P07AE sets when element G does not produce the expected ratio or appears not to engage, which can result from a leaking apply seal, restricted movement, or wear.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Leaking apply seal
- Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
- Component wear with age - mechanical play
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and review live commanded gear, input speed, and output speed to see under which shift or load element G fails to engage as expected.
- Check transmission fluid level and condition using the vehicle's specified procedure, because low, degraded, or incorrect fluid can reduce apply pressure.
- Inspect accessible transmission wiring and connectors for damage, corrosion, loose terminals, or fluid intrusion that could affect control or feedback.
- Compare commanded gear with actual speed and ratio data on a scan-tool road test, if the vehicle shifts safely enough to test.
- If the ratio evidence points to element G, have hydraulic pressure and internal operation checked for an apply-seal leak, debris, or worn parts.
Common fixes
- Correct the fluid level or service the fluid if its condition or type is wrong and the manufacturer's procedure calls for service.
- Repair damaged or poorly connected transmission wiring or connectors.
- Clean or repair restricted element G components if debris is confirmed to prevent free movement.
- Repair the leaking apply seal or replace worn element G components when internal inspection identifies them.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid driving if the transmission slips, shudders, delays engagement, or has harsh or missing shifts; continued operation can overheat or damage the friction elements. If the vehicle behaves normally, keep any trip short and gentle until the fault is diagnosed.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
