OBD-II fault code

P07A3: Transmission Friction Element A Stuck On

What it means

The transmission control module detected that friction element A did not release as expected. The code alone does not identify the cause.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The transmission control module monitors whether friction element A releases when the gear strategy calls for it to disengage. P07A3 indicates that element A appears to remain applied, which can disrupt the next gear change; the code does not identify the exact mechanical or control cause.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Hydraulic pressure or valve body fault
  2. Worn or damaged friction element
  3. Sticking solenoid or valve
  4. Wiring or control-module fault

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Capture freeze-frame data and review live gear and input/output speed data to identify the shift during which element A failed to release.
  2. Check fluid level and condition using the maker’s procedure, noting contamination or degraded fluid that could contribute to sticking valves or friction parts.
  3. Inspect transmission wiring and connectors for damage or poor contact that could keep an element A solenoid commanded incorrectly.
  4. Compare commanded gear and actual ratio during a controlled road test to confirm whether the problem follows shifts that require element A to release.
  5. If wiring and fluid checks are satisfactory, test solenoid and valve-body operation and hydraulic control against the manufacturer's specification.
  6. If control pressure releases correctly but element A remains applied, inspect its piston, friction parts, and internal passages for sticking or damage.

Common fixes

  • Correct the fluid level or replace contaminated or degraded fluid with the specified type.
  • Repair wiring or connector faults affecting element A control.
  • Repair or replace a sticking solenoid or valve-body component.
  • Repair internal sticking or damage in element A, including its piston or friction parts.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid driving if the transmission binds, shifts unpredictably, or cannot select gears normally; an element that stays applied can cause harsh shifts and further internal damage. Stop safely and arrange recovery if the vehicle is difficult to control or enters limp mode.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
