What it means
The transmission control module detected that friction element D did not release as expected. The code alone does not identify the cause.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Friction element D is a clutch or brake inside the automatic transmission that holds or connects rotating parts for selected gear ratios. The TCM compares the commanded release with transmission speed and ratio data. P07A9 sets when those signals indicate element D remains applied when it should release.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Stuck apply piston
- Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
- Component wear with age - mechanical play
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and review live commanded gear, input speed, and output speed to identify when element D appears to remain applied.
- Check transmission fluid level and condition using the vehicle's specified procedure, since contaminated or incorrect fluid can interfere with release.
- Inspect accessible transmission wiring and connectors for damage, corrosion, loose terminals, or fluid intrusion that could affect control or feedback.
- Use a scan tool to compare commanded shifts and actual speed or ratio data during a cautious road test, if the vehicle can be driven safely.
- If data confirms that element D is not releasing, have the transmission inspected for a sticking apply piston, debris, or mechanical wear.
Common fixes
- Correct the fluid level or service the fluid if its condition or type is wrong and the manufacturer's procedure calls for service.
- Repair damaged or poorly connected transmission wiring or connectors.
- Remove confirmed debris that is preventing element D's apply piston from moving freely.
- Repair or replace the sticking or worn element D parts, including the apply piston, based on internal inspection.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid driving if shifts are harsh, the transmission slips, shudders, or the vehicle enters limp mode; element D staying applied can cause further damage and unpredictable shifts. If symptoms are mild, limit driving to a short trip for diagnosis and stop if they worsen.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
