What it means
The transmission fluid temperature sensor A signal is missing or out of range. Used by shift logic to adapt timings to fluid viscosity.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Transmission fluid temperature sensor A reports fluid temperature to the transmission control module, which uses the information to adapt shift control to operating conditions. P0710 sets when sensor A's signal is missing or outside the expected range, so the module cannot trust that temperature reading.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor internally faulty
- Wiring fault
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare live transmission fluid temperature sensor A data with ambient temperature and how long the vehicle has been running.
- Check for related transmission temperature or sensor codes that may point to a shared wiring or connector issue.
- Inspect sensor A's connector and harness for corrosion, loose terminals, damaged insulation, or fluid intrusion.
- Use the wiring diagram to check sensor A's circuit for opens, shorts, and poor connections, comparing measurements with the manufacturer's specification.
- If the circuit and connector pass, test transmission fluid temperature sensor A and replace it only if it fails the specified checks.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure a loose or corroded temperature sensor A connector.
- Repair an open, shorted, or damaged sensor A circuit wire.
- Replace a damaged connector or terminal that cannot maintain contact.
- Replace transmission fluid temperature sensor A if it fails testing.
Can I keep driving?
If shifting is normal, limit driving and avoid heavy loads or towing until the temperature signal is restored. Stop if the transmission overheats, slips, or shifts harshly, because the control module may not be able to manage shifts correctly without a reliable fluid temperature reading.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
