What it means
The transmission control module monitors the circuit for transmission fluid temperature sensor D. This code sets when the circuit signal is outside the expected electrical range; the title does not specify the type of circuit fault.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Transmission fluid temperature sensor D reports fluid temperature to the transmission control module through an electrical circuit. P275A means the sensor D circuit signal is outside the expected electrical range, but the code does not by itself identify whether the fault is an open, short or another circuit problem.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open sensor element or broken sensor wire
- Corroded sensor connector
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and compare sensor D's reported temperature with other available temperature readings and ambient conditions for an implausible value.
- Inspect the sensor D connector and nearby wiring for corrosion, fluid intrusion, loose pins or damage.
- Check whether sensor D's live reading changes plausibly as the transmission warms, and note whether it is fixed or erratic.
- Test sensor D and its wiring for open or short circuits using the manufacturer's procedure and specification.
- If the sensor and wiring pass, check the transmission control module's sensor input circuit according to the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Reconnect or clean a loose or corroded sensor D connector.
- Repair damaged or shorted sensor D wiring.
- Replace transmission fluid temperature sensor D if it fails testing.
- Repair the sensor input connection if testing identifies a fault at the module.
Can I keep driving?
Keep driving limited if the transmission shifts harshly, slips, shudders or enters limp mode, because the controller may not be able to judge fluid temperature correctly. Avoid heavy loads and stop if transmission operation becomes unreliable.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
