OBD-II fault code

P0711: Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor A Circuit Range or Performance

What it means

The transmission fluid temperature sensor A reports a value within plausible range yet not matching the engine model - sensor drift or slow response.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

Transmission fluid temperature sensor A measures the fluid temperature and sends a signal to the transmission control module (TCM). The TCM compares that reading with expected temperature changes and other operating data; P0711 sets when the value seems plausible but responds too slowly or does not match the expected pattern.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Transmission fluid temperature sensor A drift or slow response
  2. Poor connector contact or corrosion
  3. Open or short in sensor wiring
  4. Incorrect fluid temperature reading due to a sensor fault

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare sensor A's reported temperature with ambient temperature on a cold transmission, since a large mismatch can reveal a biased reading.
  2. Watch sensor A's live temperature as the transmission warms and check whether it changes smoothly in line with operating conditions.
  3. Inspect sensor A's connector and nearby wiring for corrosion, loose pins, fluid intrusion, or damage.
  4. Check the sensor circuit for opens, shorts, and poor continuity using the manufacturer's wiring information.
  5. If the wiring checks out, test sensor A's response against the manufacturer's specification and inspect the fluid condition and level using the vehicle's specified procedure.

Common fixes

  • Clean and securely reconnect sensor A's connector if contact is poor.
  • Repair damaged or corroded wiring in sensor A's circuit.
  • Replace transmission fluid temperature sensor A if its reading drifts or responds too slowly.
  • Correct fluid level or condition if it is contributing to abnormal transmission temperature.

Can I keep driving?

If shifts remain normal, limit driving and arrange diagnosis soon. Stop driving if the transmission slips, shudders, shifts harshly, or enters limp mode, since continued operation with incorrect temperature information can worsen transmission damage.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
