OBD-II fault code

P070F: Transmission Fluid Level Too Low

What it means

The transmission control system has detected that the transmission fluid level is too low. The code does not specify the cause; check the level using the vehicle's prescribed procedure.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The transmission control system monitors fluid level using its level sensor or related inputs. P070F indicates that the system has detected a level below its acceptable threshold; it does not identify whether fluid leaked, was underfilled, or the reading is faulty.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Transmission fluid leak
  2. Incorrect fluid level after service
  3. Faulty fluid level sensor or its wiring
  4. Internal transmission fluid loss

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check the scan tool's fluid-level reading and any related transmission warnings.
  2. Inspect for leaks around the transmission case, cooler lines, pan, and other fluid-carrying connections before adding fluid.
  3. Check fluid level using the vehicle's prescribed procedure and specified fluid, because the correct method varies by vehicle.
  4. If the level is low, correct it using the specified procedure and inspect for a continuing leak or evidence of incorrect service fill.
  5. If the level checks correctly, inspect the level sensor wiring and connector, then test the sensor according to the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Repair an external transmission fluid leak at the affected seal, line, pan, or connection.
  • Correct an underfill using the vehicle's specified fluid and level-checking procedure.
  • Repair a faulty fluid level sensor connector or wiring if the actual level is correct.
  • Replace the fluid level sensor if it fails testing and the level is correct.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid driving until the fluid level is checked; do not continue if it is below specification, leaking, or the transmission slips or shifts abnormally. Driving with too little fluid can quickly overheat and damage the transmission.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
