OBD-II fault code

P070E: Transmission Fluid Level Sensor Circuit Intermittent or Erratic

What it means

Same as P070A with intermittent or erratic signal. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The transmission fluid level sensor sends a level signal to the control module for monitoring. P070E sets when that signal is intermittent or erratic, so the module cannot rely on the reading even though it may appear normal at other times.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Intermittent contact at connector
  2. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
  3. Harness routed against vibrating component

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and monitor live fluid-level sensor readings to see whether the signal drops out or jumps during operation.
  2. Check the actual transmission fluid level using the vehicle's prescribed procedure so an intermittent reading is not mistaken for a verified level.
  3. Inspect the sensor connector and harness for loose or corroded terminals, chafing, and routing against a vibrating component.
  4. Monitor the signal while gently moving the connector and harness to find vibration-sensitive contact loss.
  5. If the wiring remains stable, test the fluid level sensor for erratic output according to the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Secure the harness away from rubbing or vibrating components.
  • Clean and reseat a connector with intermittent contact.
  • Repair chafed wiring or replace loose or corroded terminals.
  • Replace the fluid level sensor if its output remains erratic with sound wiring.

Can I keep driving?

Verify the actual fluid level before driving and keep trips short until the intermittent reading is resolved. Stop driving if the transmission slips, shudders, or shifts abnormally, since an unreliable level signal may mask a condition that can damage the transmission.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
