OBD-II fault code

P0714: Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor A Circuit Intermittent

What it means

Same as P0711 with intermittent or erratic signal. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

Transmission fluid temperature sensor A reports fluid temperature to the TCM through an electrical circuit. P0714 sets when that signal drops out or becomes erratic intermittently, often as a loose connection or vibrating, chafed harness briefly interrupts the reading.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Intermittent contact at connector
  2. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
  3. Harness routed against vibrating component

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and review sensor A's temperature history or live data for sudden jumps or dropouts around the time the code sets.
  2. Inspect sensor A's connector for loose retention, corrosion, water intrusion, and pins that may move when the harness is touched.
  3. Trace the harness near vibrating parts and look for chafing, stretching, or unsupported sections that could make intermittent contact.
  4. With live data or the manufacturer's circuit test, gently move the harness and connector to see whether sensor A's reading cuts out.
  5. If the wiring remains stable, test sensor A for intermittent failure under the manufacturer's specified procedure.

Common fixes

  • Reseat and secure sensor A's connector and clean terminals with poor contact.
  • Repair chafed or broken wires and secure the harness away from vibration and rubbing.
  • Replace damaged connector terminals or seals.
  • Replace transmission fluid temperature sensor A if its signal remains intermittent with sound wiring.

Can I keep driving?

If shifting is normal, drive only as needed and watch for changes. Stop and arrange help if shifts become harsh, the transmission slips, or limp mode engages, since intermittent temperature data can cause poor shift control.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
