OBD-II fault code

P070D: Transmission Fluid Level Sensor Circuit High

What it means

Same as P070A with the signal voltage above the plausible range. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The transmission fluid level sensor reports fluid level to the control module. P070D sets when the sensor signal is above the valid range, which may indicate a short to a supply circuit, a connector problem, or a failed sensor.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal shorted to supply
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Supply wire pinched against B+ source

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and review live fluid-level sensor readings to see whether the high signal is continuous or occurs under specific conditions.
  2. Check the actual fluid level using the vehicle's prescribed procedure, since a high circuit signal does not confirm that the fluid level is high.
  3. Inspect the sensor connector and harness for water entry, corrosion, pushed-back pins, or wiring pinched against a powered circuit.
  4. Using the wiring diagram, test the signal circuit for a short to supply and check connector contacts against the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the circuit and connector pass, test the fluid level sensor according to the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Clean, dry, and reseat a connector affected by moisture or poor contact.
  • Repair a signal wire shorted to a supply circuit or pinched against a powered wire.
  • Replace corroded or pushed-back connector terminals that cannot be secured.
  • Replace the fluid level sensor if it fails testing.

Can I keep driving?

Check the actual fluid level before driving because the high signal does not establish how much fluid is in the transmission. If the level is low or shifting is abnormal, avoid driving; low fluid and continued slipping can quickly damage the transmission.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
