OBD-II fault code

P070C: Transmission Fluid Level Sensor Circuit Low

What it means

Same as P070A with the signal voltage below the plausible range. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The transmission fluid level sensor sends a level signal to the control module. P070C sets when that signal falls below the module's valid range, which can result from a signal wire shorted to ground, a poor connection, or a sensor fault.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal shorted to ground
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Harness chafing through insulation

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check live fluid-level sensor data to confirm whether the low reading is present now or occurred only under particular conditions.
  2. Check the actual transmission fluid level using the vehicle's prescribed procedure, since a low electrical signal does not prove the fluid itself is low.
  3. Inspect the fluid level sensor connector and harness for corrosion, loose or pushed-back terminals, and insulation worn through against ground.
  4. Use the wiring diagram to test the sensor signal for a short to ground and check connector contacts against the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the signal wiring and connections pass, test the fluid level sensor according to the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure corroded or loose fluid level sensor terminals.
  • Repair chafed wiring or a signal wire shorted to ground.
  • Replace a connector or terminal that cannot maintain contact.
  • Replace the fluid level sensor if it fails testing.

Can I keep driving?

Check the actual fluid level before driving; do not assume the low circuit signal means the transmission is low on fluid. Avoid driving if the fluid is below the specified level or the transmission slips or shifts abnormally, because low fluid can cause serious damage.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
