OBD-II fault code

P0704: Clutch Switch Input Circuit

What it means

A circuit fault on the clutch pedal position switch input - used by the ECU to inhibit cruise control, allow cranking, and time gear-shift events on manual transmissions.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The clutch pedal position switch tells the engine control system when the clutch is pressed. P0704 sets when the clutch-switch input circuit has an electrical fault or fails to provide the expected signal, which can affect cranking permission, cruise control, and shift-related control on a manual vehicle.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Faulty clutch pedal switch
  2. Open or short in switch wiring
  3. Poor connector contact
  4. Misadjusted switch

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light on
  • Cruise control may not operate normally
  • Engine may not start if the clutch switch signal is required

How to diagnose it

  1. Check whether the engine cranks with the clutch pedal fully pressed and whether cruise control behaves normally, noting any intermittent operation.
  2. Read freeze-frame data and live clutch-switch input to confirm whether the control module sees the signal change as the pedal moves.
  3. Inspect the clutch switch mounting, pedal contact point, connector, and nearby wiring for misadjustment, looseness, corrosion, or damage.
  4. Test switch operation and circuit continuity or shorts according to the manufacturer's procedure while moving the pedal through its travel.
  5. If switch and wiring tests pass, verify the signal reaches the control module and check its input circuit.

Common fixes

  • Adjust the clutch pedal switch so it is actuated at the correct point in pedal travel.
  • Secure or clean a loose or corroded clutch-switch connector.
  • Repair an open, short, or damaged wire in the clutch-switch input circuit.
  • Replace a clutch switch that fails its operation test.
  • Repair a confirmed fault in the control module input circuit.

Can I keep driving?

If the switch signal is needed to authorize cranking, the vehicle may fail to start; do not bypass the switch or start in gear. Avoid cruise control until the fault is fixed, since the system may not respond to clutch-pedal operation as intended.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
