What it means
A general circuit fault on the control output to a variable-displacement A/C compressor - the ECU cannot vary swash-plate angle and the compressor stays at fixed displacement.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
A variable displacement A/C compressor uses an electrically controlled valve to change its pumping capacity. The control module monitors the compressor control circuit and sets P06A0 when it detects a general electrical fault, without specifying that the circuit is low or high.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Faulty variable A/C compressor control solenoid
- Open or short in control wiring
- Poor connector contact
- Compressor control fault
- Control module output fault
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Possible limp mode or no-start
- Multiple follow-up faults across modules
- Reset/relearn may be needed after repair
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and scan for A/C, compressor, and charging system codes that may share the same operating conditions.
- Check whether the A/C cools consistently and inspect the compressor control valve connector and nearby wiring for damage, looseness, or corrosion.
- Use live data to compare the requested compressor capacity with available compressor or A/C pressure readings while the system is commanded on.
- With the system and circuit identified from the vehicle wiring information, check the control valve circuit for an open, short, or poor contact.
- Test the compressor control valve and module output against the manufacturer's specification before replacing either component.
Common fixes
- Repair damaged wiring or a loose connector at the compressor control valve.
- Clean corrosion and restore poor terminal contact in the control circuit.
- Replace the variable compressor control valve if testing confirms it has failed.
- Repair the control module output only after the valve and wiring test correctly.
Can I keep driving?
This fault most often affects air conditioning rather than basic engine operation, so driving is generally possible if the engine runs normally. Stop using the A/C if the compressor makes unusual noise or the engine begins to run poorly.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
