OBD-II fault code

P069E: Fuel Pump Control Module Requested MIL Illumination

What it means

The fuel pump control module has reported a fault to the ECM and requested that the malfunction indicator lamp be illuminated. Look up the FPCM-side code for the actual fault.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The fuel pump control module manages electrical power to the fuel pump and reports detected faults to the engine control module. P069E means the fuel pump control module has requested the check engine light; this code alone does not identify the underlying pump, wiring, pressure, or module fault.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Fuel pump control module fault
  2. Fuel pump or its circuit fault
  3. Module power, ground, or wiring problem
  4. Fuel pressure or delivery problem

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Hard start, no start, or stalling under load
  • Power loss especially at high load or rpm
  • Possible long cranking time

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and retrieve all codes from both the engine and fuel pump control modules, because the module's own code points to the reported fault.
  2. Check whether the engine cranks normally and note any stalling or power loss, then compare the symptoms with the recorded operating conditions.
  3. Inspect the fuel pump control module connectors, power, ground, and harness for corrosion, looseness, damage, or water entry.
  4. Use live data to check commanded pump operation and available fuel pressure or delivery readings under the conditions that trigger the problem.
  5. Test the pump circuit and fuel delivery using the vehicle wiring information and manufacturer's specification before condemning the module or pump.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged wiring, poor grounds, or corroded connections at the fuel pump control module.
  • Replace a failed fuel pump if testing confirms inadequate delivery.
  • Replace the fuel pump control module if its power, ground, wiring, and pump circuit test correctly but it still reports a fault.
  • Clear codes and verify pressure and operation during starting and under load.

Can I keep driving?

Driving may be unreliable if the pump cannot maintain fuel delivery; the engine can stall or lose power, especially under load. Avoid high speed and heavy acceleration, and stop if the engine begins to stall.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
