OBD-II fault code

P06A2: Variable A/C Compressor Control Circuit High

What it means

Same as P06A0 with the control line shorted to supply. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The variable A/C compressor control circuit lets the control module regulate compressor operation. The module monitors the control line for an unexpectedly high electrical level, which can occur if the line is shorted to a supply wire or a connector has a poor connection. This code points to the compressor control line, rather than a fault in a sensor reference rail.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Control line shorted to supply
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Supply wire pinched against B+ source

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Possible limp mode or no-start
  • Multiple follow-up faults across modules
  • Reset/relearn may be needed after repair

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check for related A/C or module codes to see when the compressor control fault occurred and whether other circuits are affected.
  2. Inspect the compressor control wiring and connectors for chafing, water ingress, corrosion, pushed-back pins, or contact with a supply wire.
  3. With the code active, gently move the accessible harness sections while watching the control circuit data for a change that could reveal an intermittent short.
  4. Use the vehicle wiring diagram to identify the compressor control line, then test it for an unintended connection to a power supply and check connector contact quality.
  5. If the wiring and connections pass, follow the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure to assess the controlling module and verify its output.

Common fixes

  • Secure or reroute wiring that is chafing against a supply wire.
  • Repair damaged insulation or replace a pinched section of the compressor control wire.
  • Clean or repair corroded connectors and restore pins that have backed out.
  • Replace a faulty control module only after its wiring and output have been verified.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine runs normally and there are no other warnings, limit driving and avoid relying on the A/C until the fault is diagnosed. Stop if the vehicle enters reduced-power mode, has starting trouble, or develops additional warnings, since a supply short can affect other circuits.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
