What it means
Same as P06A0 with the control line shorted to ground. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
A variable displacement A/C compressor changes its pumping capacity through an electrically controlled valve. P06A1 sets when the module detects low voltage in the compressor control circuit, often because the control wire is shorted to ground or a connection has excessive resistance.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Control line shorted to ground
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
- Harness chafing through insulation
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Possible limp mode or no-start
- Multiple follow-up faults across modules
- Reset/relearn may be needed after repair
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and scan for other A/C or compressor codes to identify faults that occur with the low circuit reading.
- Check A/C operation, then inspect the compressor control valve connector and harness for chafing, moisture, corrosion, or pushed-back pins.
- Use live data to compare requested compressor capacity with available pressure or compressor readings while gently moving the harness.
- Using the vehicle wiring information, isolate the control valve and check whether the circuit remains low with the valve disconnected.
- Test the control wire for a short to ground and check valve and connector resistance against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Repair chafed compressor control wiring that is contacting ground.
- Clean corrosion and restore loose or pushed-back connector terminals.
- Replace the compressor control valve if testing confirms it is pulling the circuit low.
- Clear the code and verify compressor response after the repair.
Can I keep driving?
The main effect is usually loss or inconsistent A/C cooling, and normal driving is generally possible if the engine runs normally. Turn the A/C off if the compressor makes unusual noise or engine operation changes.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
