OBD-II fault code

P265F: Variable A/C Compressor Control Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The variable-displacement A/C compressor control valve does not respond to commands within tolerance. Refrigerant flow regulation is degraded so cabin temperature varies or efficiency drops.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

A variable-displacement A/C compressor uses a control valve to adjust how much refrigerant it pumps. The module compares the requested compressor output with the valve or system response; this code sets when that response falls outside the expected range, so cooling can fluctuate or weaken.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Control valve spool sticky from oil residue
  2. Solenoid coil resistance drift
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • A/C cooling varies or is reduced
  • A/C may take longer to cool the cabin

How to diagnose it

  1. Use a scan tool to record freeze-frame data and compare commanded compressor output with available A/C pressure and temperature readings.
  2. Check whether cooling varies with engine speed or A/C demand, and inspect the compressor control valve connector and nearby wiring for damage, oil contamination, or loose pins.
  3. With the system operating, compare the valve command and sensor readings in live data to see whether the response is delayed or inconsistent.
  4. Check the valve circuit and coil for continuity, shorts, and resistance drift, following the manufacturer's test procedure and specification.
  5. If the electrical checks pass, have the control valve and compressor assessed for a sticking spool or degraded sensor response before replacing the compressor.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose, corroded, or damaged control-valve connector or wiring.
  • Replace a control valve with a sticking spool if confirmed by testing.
  • Replace a control-valve solenoid with out-of-specification coil resistance.
  • Replace an aged or inaccurate control sensor if testing confirms it is outside calibration.

Can I keep driving?

You can usually drive if the engine runs normally, but expect unreliable or weak cabin cooling. Avoid relying on the A/C for windscreen demisting in conditions where clear visibility is critical.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
