OBD-II fault code

P03E1: Cylinder 8 Pressure Too High

What it means

Cylinder 8 measured peak combustion pressure is above the calibrated maximum — typically pre-ignition, knock, over-fuelling, or runaway combustion.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The cylinder 8 pressure sensor reports combustion pressure to the ECM. This code sets when cylinder 8 peak pressure exceeds its calibrated maximum, which may indicate abnormal combustion, excessive fuel delivery, an injector fault, or incorrect ignition control.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Abnormal combustion or knock in cylinder 8
  2. Excessive fuel delivery to cylinder 8
  3. Cylinder 8 injector leaking or malfunctioning
  4. Incorrect ignition timing or spark control

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Engine knocking or pinging
  • Rough running or misfire
  • Reduced power

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and cylinder 8 pressure live data for the conditions when pressure rises above the expected range.
  2. Scan for related misfire, knock, fuel, and ignition timing codes that could help explain high cylinder 8 pressure.
  3. Inspect cylinder 8 injector and ignition connections, and check for signs of fuel leakage or damaged wiring.
  4. Test cylinder 8 injector operation and fuel delivery using the manufacturer's procedure to identify over-fuelling.
  5. Check ignition and knock control data, then verify the pressure sensor and circuit if combustion causes do not account for the reading.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged or loose cylinder 8 injector or ignition wiring and connections.
  • Correct a confirmed cylinder 8 injector leak or excessive fuel delivery.
  • Repair the ignition or knock-control fault affecting cylinder 8 timing.
  • Replace the cylinder 8 pressure sensor if it fails the manufacturer's test.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid driving with persistent knocking, severe roughness, or power loss; this code may trigger reduced-power operation and continued abnormal combustion can damage the engine. Stop safely if knocking is pronounced or the engine runs badly.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
