What it means
Cylinder 8 measured peak combustion pressure is below the calibrated minimum — typically low compression, weak injection, or stuck-open exhaust valve.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The cylinder 8 pressure sensor measures combustion pressure, which the ECM uses to assess how strongly that cylinder is firing. This code sets when cylinder 8 peak pressure falls below the calibrated minimum, which can result from low compression, a valve leak, piston or ring wear, or a head gasket leak.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Low compression on cylinder 8
- Leaking or damaged cylinder 8 valves
- Worn or damaged cylinder 8 piston or rings
- Cylinder 8 head gasket leak
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Rough running or engine misfire
- Reduced power
- Engine vibration
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and compare cylinder 8 pressure readings with the other cylinders under similar operating conditions.
- Check for accompanying misfire codes and inspect cylinder 8 wiring and sensor connections to rule out a misleading pressure reading.
- Test cylinder 8 compression and compare the result with the manufacturer's specification and other cylinders.
- Perform a cylinder 8 leak-down test to help locate leakage through the valves, piston rings, or head gasket.
- If mechanical tests do not explain the low reading, verify cylinder 8 pressure sensor operation and its signal circuit.
Common fixes
- Repair a loose or damaged cylinder 8 pressure sensor connection if it is causing a false low reading.
- Repair leaking cylinder 8 valves or the associated valve-train fault.
- Repair a cylinder 8 head gasket leak if confirmed.
- Repair or rebuild cylinder 8 if testing confirms piston, ring, or bore damage.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid extended driving, high engine loads, and towing; a weak cylinder can cause rough running, power loss, and increased emissions. Stop if the engine misfires severely or overheats, since continued operation can worsen engine damage.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
