OBD-II fault code

P03B9: Cylinder 4 Pressure Too High

What it means

Cylinder 4 measured peak combustion pressure is above the calibrated maximum — typically pre-ignition, knock, over-fuelling, or runaway combustion.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The cylinder 4 pressure sensor measures combustion pressure so the engine control module can monitor how combustion develops in that cylinder. This code sets when cylinder 4 peak pressure exceeds the calibrated maximum, a condition that can result from abnormal combustion, excessive fueling, or incorrect ignition timing.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Abnormally early combustion or engine knock
  2. Excessive fuel delivery to cylinder 4
  3. Incorrect ignition timing
  4. Combustion-chamber deposits

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Engine knocking or pinging
  • Rough running
  • Reduced engine power

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and cylinder 4 pressure and knock-related readings to establish the engine speed and load when pressure became excessive.
  2. Check whether the engine is knocking or pinging, and inspect for signs of overheating or abnormal combustion before running it under load.
  3. Inspect the cylinder 4 sensor connector and wiring for damage that could distort the pressure signal.
  4. Check cylinder 4 injector operation and fuel delivery using the manufacturer's specified tests for over-fuelling.
  5. Verify ignition timing and related control data where applicable, following the vehicle's service information.
  6. If fueling, timing, and wiring pass, investigate cylinder 4 combustion-chamber deposits or sensor accuracy using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedures.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged cylinder 4 sensor wiring or connector terminals that are producing a false high reading.
  • Repair or replace a cylinder 4 injector confirmed to be delivering excessive fuel.
  • Correct an ignition timing or engine-control fault confirmed by testing.
  • Address confirmed combustion-chamber deposits or a faulty pressure sensor using the manufacturer's procedures.

Can I keep driving?

This code can indicate damaging abnormal combustion, and limp mode may limit engine power. Avoid driving under load or accelerating hard; if knocking is present, stop the engine and arrange prompt diagnosis because continued operation can damage the cylinder or engine.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
