OBD-II fault code

P236C: Cylinder 12 Pressure Too High

What it means

Cylinder 12 measured peak combustion pressure is above the calibrated maximum — typically pre-ignition, knock, over-fuelling, or runaway combustion.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The engine controller evaluates the cylinder 12 pressure trace to check the pressure produced during combustion. P236C sets when cylinder 12 peak pressure exceeds the calibrated maximum; excessive fueling or abnormal combustion such as knock or pre-ignition may raise it.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Cylinder 12 injector over-delivering fuel
  2. Abnormally high combustion pressure
  3. Combustion knock or pre-ignition

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Engine knock or pinging
  • Rough running
  • Reduced engine power

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and note the load, engine speed, and temperature when cylinder 12 pressure exceeded its limit.
  2. Check for related knock, misfire, and fuel-system codes, then listen for knocking or pinging under the reported conditions.
  3. Review cylinder 12 injector operation and fuel-trim or combustion data for evidence of excessive fuel delivery.
  4. Inspect the cylinder 12 sensor mounting and wiring for faults that could distort the pressure trace.
  5. If the reading is confirmed, follow the manufacturer's procedure to investigate abnormal combustion and verify the cylinder 12 pressure sensor.

Common fixes

  • Repair or replace the cylinder 12 injector if testing confirms over-delivery.
  • Correct the cause of knock or pre-ignition identified by diagnosis.
  • Repair loose sensor mounting or damaged wiring if it is distorting the cylinder 12 pressure reading.
  • Replace the pressure sensor only if it fails the manufacturer's test and the combustion condition has been ruled out.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid hard acceleration, high engine loads, and towing while this fault is present, especially if the engine knocks. Stop driving if knocking is persistent or severe, since abnormal combustion can quickly damage the engine.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
