OBD-II fault code

P039B: Cylinder 1 Pressure Too High

What it means

Cylinder 1 measured peak combustion pressure is above the calibrated maximum — typically pre-ignition, knock, over-fuelling, or runaway combustion.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The control module uses the cylinder 1 pressure sensor to monitor peak combustion pressure and detect pressure that could threaten the engine. This code sets when cylinder 1's measured peak exceeds the calibrated upper limit; the module may reduce engine power to limit damage.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Excessive fueling to cylinder 1
  2. Knock or pre-ignition
  3. Faulty cylinder 1 pressure sensor
  4. Engine control or timing fault

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Engine knocking or pinging
  • Rough running or misfire
  • Reduced power

How to diagnose it

  1. If the engine is knocking or the warning indicates reduced power, stop safely and avoid further load before checking the fault.
  2. Use a scan tool to save freeze-frame data and review cylinder 1 pressure, misfire, and fueling information for the conditions that triggered the code.
  3. Inspect the cylinder 1 pressure-sensor connector and wiring for damage, poor contact, or a signal that could falsely report excessive pressure.
  4. Check cylinder 1 injector operation and fueling for over-delivery, and compare results with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the sensor and fueling checks pass, investigate knock, pre-ignition, and engine-control or timing faults using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose or damaged cylinder 1 pressure-sensor connection.
  • Repair the cylinder 1 sensor wiring if it is shorted, damaged, or producing an implausible signal.
  • Correct excessive fuel delivery to cylinder 1 if injector testing confirms it.
  • Repair a confirmed engine-control or timing fault causing abnormal cylinder 1 combustion.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid driving while the engine knocks, pings, or runs roughly; stop if these symptoms persist, and do not override reduced-power operation. Excessive cylinder 1 pressure can damage the piston, valves, or other engine parts.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
