OBD-II fault code

P0010: A Camshaft Position Actuator Circuit/Open Bank 1

What it means

An electrical fault in the bank 1 intake camshaft position actuator solenoid (variable valve timing). The ECU monitors current and feedback on the oil control valve and sets this code when the circuit is open, shorted, or out of range.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The bank 1 intake camshaft actuator solenoid, often called the oil control valve, directs oil to adjust intake valve timing. The control module monitors its electrical circuit and sets P0010 when that circuit is open or its electrical response is outside the expected range. This code identifies the intake actuator circuit on bank 1, rather than the exhaust actuator or a timing-position error.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Oil control valve electrically failed
  2. Wiring or connector fault to actuator

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
  • Possible rough idle or stalling
  • Increased fuel consumption

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check whether P0010 is current or intermittent, noting engine temperature and operating conditions.
  2. Locate the bank 1 intake actuator using vehicle service information and inspect its connector and nearby harness for oil intrusion, corrosion, breaks, or chafing.
  3. Check the actuator circuit for power, ground, continuity, and shorts using the wiring diagram and manufacturer's specifications.
  4. Test the bank 1 intake actuator electrically and, where supported, command it with a scan tool to confirm its response.
  5. If the circuit and actuator pass, check related control-module outputs and confirm the repair by clearing the code and monitoring it return.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or clean the bank 1 intake actuator connector if contact is poor.
  • Repair an open, shorted, or damaged section of the actuator wiring.
  • Replace the bank 1 intake camshaft actuator solenoid if it fails electrical testing.
  • Repair a control-module circuit fault if diagnosis confirms it.

Can I keep driving?

Gentle, short-distance driving is usually possible if the engine runs smoothly, but expect reduced power or fuel economy. Avoid hard acceleration, and stop if it stalls or runs roughly enough to affect control.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
