What it means
The mechanical pressure relief valve on the fuel rail has opened due to overpressure. Indicates a malfunction of the rail pressure regulation that drove pressure beyond the safe limit.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The fuel rail's mechanical pressure relief valve opens to release pressure when it exceeds a protective threshold. The ECU detects that the valve has activated, which indicates rail pressure rose beyond the intended range. A regulator that fails to control pressure or a sensor that reports pressure too low can contribute to this condition.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Pressure regulator valve stuck closed
- Rail pressure sensor reading low
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Rough running or hesitation
- Reduced power
- Engine may stall or be hard to start
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and review commanded and actual rail pressure around the time the relief valve activated.
- Inspect the rail pressure sensor connector and wiring for damage or poor contact that could make the ECU underestimate pressure.
- Check scan-tool sensor readings for plausibility against commanded pressure as engine speed and load change.
- Inspect the pressure regulator and its wiring for sticking, contamination, or electrical faults that could prevent pressure from being reduced.
- If the sensor and regulator checks pass, test rail pressure control and the relief valve according to the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Repair a loose, corroded, or damaged rail pressure sensor connection or wiring.
- Replace a pressure sensor that fails plausibility or electrical testing.
- Clean or replace a pressure regulator that is stuck or fails its control test.
- Replace a relief valve that fails the manufacturer's inspection procedure.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving and avoid heavy loads because excessive rail pressure can cause rough running, stalling, or further fuel-system damage. If the engine stalls, runs very poorly, or the warning returns promptly, stop and have the fault checked before continuing.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
