What it means
The bank 1 intake camshaft is more advanced than commanded, or the actuator does not respond as expected. Often caused by stuck-open oil control valves, sludge in VVT passages, or low oil pressure.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The variable valve timing system uses engine oil to advance or retard the bank 1 intake camshaft. The control module compares commanded intake timing with camshaft position feedback. P0011 sets when the intake cam is more advanced than requested or does not respond as expected, often because oil flow or the actuator is holding it advanced.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Oil control valve stuck (advance position)
- Sludge or debris in VVT oil passages
- Low engine oil pressure or wrong oil viscosity
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
- Possible rough idle or stalling
- Increased fuel consumption
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and compare commanded and actual bank 1 intake cam timing at idle and as engine speed changes.
- Check the engine oil level, condition, and viscosity against the manufacturer's requirements because VVT depends on clean oil at suitable pressure.
- Inspect the bank 1 intake oil control valve connector and wiring, then check for sludge or debris at the valve and accessible oil passages.
- Use a scan tool to command intake timing changes and see whether the bank 1 cam follows or remains advanced.
- If oil condition and valve operation are acceptable, check oil pressure and inspect the intake cam phaser and timing components to manufacturer's procedures.
Common fixes
- Correct low oil level and change oil and filter using the specified grade if oil is dirty or incorrect.
- Clean or replace a sticking bank 1 intake oil control valve.
- Clear sludge or debris restricting the bank 1 intake VVT oil passages.
- Repair low oil pressure or replace a worn intake cam phaser if testing confirms the fault.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine is smooth and oil pressure is normal, drive gently and arrange diagnosis soon; avoid high engine speeds and heavy loads. Stop if oil pressure warning appears, the engine stalls, or rough running becomes severe, as continued operation can worsen timing or engine damage.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
