OBD-II fault code

P0012: A Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Retarded (Bank 1)

What it means

The bank 1 intake camshaft remains retarded compared to commanded position. Common causes include a stuck-closed oil control valve, blocked oil passages, or a worn cam phaser.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The variable valve timing system uses oil pressure to adjust the bank 1 intake camshaft. The control module compares requested intake timing with camshaft position feedback. P0012 sets when the intake cam remains more retarded than commanded, which can happen when oil cannot reach the actuator or the phaser cannot advance.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Oil control valve stuck (retard position)
  2. Cam phaser internally worn

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
  • Possible rough idle or stalling
  • Increased fuel consumption

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and compare commanded and actual bank 1 intake cam timing, especially during warm-up and changes in engine speed.
  2. Check oil level, condition, and viscosity against the manufacturer's requirements because restricted or unsuitable oil can slow the intake cam actuator.
  3. Inspect the bank 1 intake oil control valve connector and wiring, then check the valve and accessible oil passages for blockage or sticking.
  4. Command intake timing changes with a scan tool and observe whether the bank 1 intake cam responds from its retarded position.
  5. If oil supply and valve checks pass, assess engine oil pressure and inspect the intake cam phaser and timing components to manufacturer's procedures.

Common fixes

  • Correct low oil level or replace dirty or incorrect oil and filter with the specified grade.
  • Clean or replace a sticking bank 1 intake oil control valve.
  • Clear a blockage in the bank 1 intake VVT oil passages.
  • Replace a worn intake cam phaser or repair a timing fault confirmed by testing.

Can I keep driving?

Drive only gently if the engine remains stable, and avoid high speeds or heavy loads until diagnosed because power loss or stalling may occur. Stop if it runs very roughly, stalls, or an oil pressure warning appears.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
