OBD-II fault code

P000D: B Camshaft Position Slow Response Bank 2

What it means

The control module detects that camshaft “B” on bank 2 responds too slowly to a commanded position change. “B” usually refers to the exhaust camshaft, but its physical location can vary by engine design.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The variable valve timing system uses oil pressure and a cam phaser to change the timing of camshaft B, usually the exhaust camshaft, on bank 2. P000D sets when the control module commands a position change but bank 2 camshaft B responds more slowly than expected.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Exhaust VVT solenoid clogged
  2. Cam phaser worn

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
  • Possible rough idle or stalling
  • Increased fuel consumption

How to diagnose it

  1. Use freeze-frame and live data to compare commanded and actual bank 2 camshaft B positions and note when the response lags.
  2. Check engine oil level, condition, and viscosity against the manufacturer's requirements because the bank 2 exhaust phaser depends on adequate oil flow.
  3. Inspect the bank 2 exhaust cam VVT solenoid connector and wiring for damage, poor contact, or oil contamination.
  4. If supported, command the bank 2 exhaust cam solenoid with a scan tool and check whether cam position follows the command.
  5. Test the exhaust VVT solenoid and oil passages for restriction, then inspect the bank 2 exhaust cam phaser if those checks pass.

Common fixes

  • Correct the oil level and use oil that meets the manufacturer's specification.
  • Clean or replace a sludge-restricted bank 2 exhaust cam VVT solenoid as appropriate.
  • Repair damaged wiring or connector terminals at the bank 2 exhaust cam solenoid.
  • Replace the bank 2 exhaust cam phaser if testing confirms slow or restricted movement.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine idles smoothly and has normal power, a short, gentle trip for diagnosis may be possible, but avoid hard acceleration because bank 2 exhaust timing may not respond properly. Stop driving if it stalls, runs very roughly, or loses substantial power.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
