OBD-II fault code

P000A: A Camshaft Position Slow Response Bank 1

What it means

The control module detects that camshaft “A” on bank 1 responds too slowly to a commanded position change. “A” usually refers to the intake camshaft, but its physical location can vary by engine design.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The variable valve timing system uses oil pressure and a cam phaser to change the timing of camshaft A, usually the intake camshaft, on bank 1. P000A sets when the control module commands a position change but bank 1 camshaft A responds more slowly than expected.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. VVT solenoid clogged with sludge
  2. Low oil pressure or wrong oil viscosity
  3. Cam phaser worn internally

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
  • Possible rough idle or stalling
  • Increased fuel consumption

How to diagnose it

  1. Use freeze-frame and live data to compare commanded and actual bank 1 camshaft A positions and note when the response lags.
  2. Check engine oil level, condition, and viscosity against the manufacturer's requirements because the phaser depends on clean oil flow.
  3. Inspect the bank 1 camshaft A VVT solenoid connector and wiring for damage, poor contact, or oil contamination.
  4. If supported, command the bank 1 camshaft A solenoid with a scan tool and check whether the cam position follows the command.
  5. Test or inspect the VVT solenoid and oil passages for sludge, then assess the bank 1 cam phaser if oil flow and solenoid operation are sound.

Common fixes

  • Correct the oil level and use oil that meets the manufacturer's specification.
  • Clean or replace a sludge-restricted bank 1 camshaft A VVT solenoid as appropriate.
  • Repair damaged wiring or connector terminals at the bank 1 VVT solenoid.
  • Replace a worn bank 1 cam phaser if testing confirms it cannot respond correctly.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine idles smoothly and has normal power, a short, gentle trip for diagnosis may be possible, but avoid hard acceleration because bank 1 intake timing may not respond properly. Stop driving if it stalls, runs very roughly, or loses substantial power.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
