What it means
The control module detects that camshaft “B” on bank 1 responds too slowly to a commanded position change. “B” usually refers to the exhaust camshaft, but its physical location can vary by engine design.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The variable valve timing system uses oil pressure and a cam phaser to change the timing of camshaft B, usually the exhaust camshaft, on bank 1. P000B sets when the control module commands a position change but bank 1 camshaft B responds more slowly than expected.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Exhaust VVT solenoid clogged
- Low oil pressure
- Exhaust cam phaser worn
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
- Possible rough idle or stalling
- Increased fuel consumption
How to diagnose it
- Use freeze-frame and live data to compare commanded and actual bank 1 camshaft B positions and note when the response lags.
- Check engine oil level, condition, and viscosity against the manufacturer's requirements because the exhaust cam phaser depends on adequate oil flow.
- Inspect the bank 1 exhaust cam VVT solenoid connector and wiring for damage, poor contact, or oil contamination.
- If supported, command the bank 1 exhaust cam solenoid with a scan tool and check whether cam position follows the command.
- Test the exhaust VVT solenoid and oil passages for sludge, then assess the bank 1 exhaust cam phaser if oil flow and solenoid operation are sound.
Common fixes
- Correct the oil level and use oil that meets the manufacturer's specification.
- Clean or replace a sludge-restricted bank 1 exhaust cam VVT solenoid as appropriate.
- Repair damaged wiring or connector terminals at the bank 1 exhaust cam solenoid.
- Replace the bank 1 exhaust cam phaser if testing confirms slow or restricted movement.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine idles smoothly and has normal power, a short, gentle trip for diagnosis may be possible, but avoid hard acceleration because bank 1 exhaust timing may not respond properly. Stop driving if it stalls, runs very roughly, or loses substantial power.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
